Spironolactone As
A Treatment For Acne
Although initially designed as a diuretic to treat high blood pressure, spironolactone
has more latterly also been used in order to control
a number of other conditions, including acne.
Because spironolactone is an an antiandrogen (blocks testosterone production), it
can only be used by women, since in men it can produce female secondary
characteristics,
including gynecomastia (breast growth), loss of body hair as well as
impotence. Because spirononlatctone can also act on male babies, women of childbearing age
should protect themselves against becoming pregnant while using the drug.
Spironolactone works in a method similar to that of Accutane and the natural
Accutane alternatives described in my report (available free by following the
directions below), in that it decreases the amount of oil being produced by the sebum
glands. It can be taken for one to two years with periodic rest periods.
Although the FDA has yet to approve spironolactone as a treatment for
acne, dermatologists are increasingly prescribing it for suitable candidates,
and the women using it appear to be achieving very favorable results.
